Chengbin Zhang is a Shanghai-based documentary photographer working between China and the United States. Since 2002, he has been capturing life’s unfiltered realities, focusing on everyday experiences in rapidly transforming urban and semi-urban communities. His long-term projects explore labor, aging, collective identity, and the impact of environmental and economic change, including climate justice and water-related challenges on ordinary lives. He often follows the same subjects over extended periods to emphasize continuity and depth.

More than a photographer, Chengbin is a visual storyteller. He seeks to uncover the essence beneath appearances, documenting meaningful stories with authenticity and a restrained visual language. Through his lens, he aims to inspire reflection, provoke thought, and evoke emotion.

Beyond traditional photography, he experiments with post-photographic expressions, incorporating a comic-inspired visual style. Using subtle humor and sharp satire, he explores themes of social freedom, identity, and resistance. Through this work, he challenges societal norms, sparks meaningful dialogue, and demonstrates photography as a tool for advocacy and change.
